Artists Glorifying God

Liz Quaday

Liz Quaday of Morgan Hill Presbyterian Churchis a talented artist using her gifts to glorify God through the beautiful banners that hang in the church sanctuary.  Below are samples sent from the church.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and graduated with a BFA in 1980. By training and profession I am a freelance illustrator, living and working from my home in Morgan Hill with My husband, Steve, and daughter, Allana. We became members of MHPC in 1992 and I have been very active in volunteering there in several ministries, most notably as an Elder and in the Children's Ministries area.  

About 3 years ago, I was approached by the Worship and Music Committee about designing a series of banners for our sanctuary. I took on the challenge, and you see part of the results. I have a series of 8 banners planned, with the theme of "The Disciplines and Privileges of the Christian Life". These designs will represent Baptism, Communion, Praise & Worship, Biblestudy, Prayer, Giving, Mission & Evangelism and Service. The first four of the series are completed and the remaining 4 will hopefully be under way this summer.

The project has been an interesting challenge for me as an artist. To distill these deep yet simple theological concepts down into a single visual image has given me a greater appreciation for the designers of the significant stained glass windows of churches throughout history. I want them to be traditionally realistic enough to have the average congregation member be able to relate to them, yet abstract enough for those who use them for meditation to be able to glean deeper spiritual truths from each one. Designing the banners has led me to a deeper understanding of my own faith.
