Bread for the World

Gathering and Lobby Day

June 9 - 12, 2007

O God, to those who have hunger give bread;

and to us who have bread give the hunger for justice.

- A Latin American prayer,  Quoted in Cry Freedom, by Charles Ringma.

Hunger-fighters from all over the US (approx. 1,000 good people,) gathered June 9-12 at American University in Washington D.C. to learn more about the Farm Bill, Bread for the Worlds current campaign, gain new skills to help alleviate hunger and poverty and to network with fellow Bread members, staff and legilative representatives. Armed with plenty of information and fueled with our determination to be of service to the poor, we visited Capitol Hill on Breads Lobby Day, June 12.  California attendees visited both Senator Feinstein and Boxer's staff, and most of the Congress people urging them to expand the food stamp program, save school lunches and breakfasts, reduce commodity payments to big Agribusinesses and support small rural farmers.  The Farm Bill, which is "re-authorized" every five years, will be rewritten and approved this term.

Lobby Day on Capitol Hill: BFW California organizer David Gist gathers California group (about 20 people from around the state) together for our meeting with Senator Boxer's staff.

California Bread gathering attendees  wait to see Senator Feinsteins staff.
